Derbyshire Weekend

Walking in the Peak District – October 10th-12th

This short break was a ‘book your own accommodation’, walking off the map weekend.  The centre for our weekend was the village of Castleton which lies very close to the foot of Mam Tor at the end of the Hope Valley. Castleton was the ideal centre for us with plenty of B & B accommodation, pubs,  and very good access onto the surrounding hills. 14 of us met up outside the Tourist Information office on a slightly overcast Friday morning.  Our route for the day was a circular walk from Castleton up to Hollins Cross on the Mam Tor ridge, then down into the Vale of Edale before climbing up Rushup Edge and returning to Castleton, a total of 111/2 miles. The ascents were a challenge for some of the group but the rewards were constantly changing views of the surrounding hills. Once back in Castleton and after a reviving bath and a cup of tea everyone met up at the Nag’s Head for an evening meal followed by the pub quiz. We did well, only being beaten into 2nd place by the local team, after three tie break questions.

Coach trip to Birmingham

In September a group of us visited Birmingham. We were dropped off at different points along the canal for long and short walks, which both ended at Gas Street Basin in the city. There was time in the afternoon to go shopping or to explore a city which is almost unrecognisable from 30 years ago. Luckily the weather was good and there was plenty going on to keep us entertained.
