The Newmarket & District group of the Rambler’s Association was formed in 1982. Due to the particular location of the town, which is in Suffolk but almost completely surrounded by Cambridgeshire, the group attracted members from both counties. This is still the case today although there is now an East Cambridgeshire group in existence, based on the adjoining District Council area. The Newmarket group’s official catchment area extends along the western fringe of Suffolk and includes the expanding town of Haverhill.
Full and/or half day walks take place on Sundays throughout the year. Full day walks are usually 10 miles or more, while half day walks are around 5 miles in length. The group also walks on Wednesdays, with evening walks in the summer months and morning walks during the rest of the year (with a break mid winter); these generally end near a pub where lunch can be obtained.
The Newmarket Ramblers are a very friendly group and also arrange social activities and occasional short breaks and coach trips, which provide the opportunity to walk in a different area.
The group welcomes non-members who would like to give rambling a try but after you have joined us on a few walks we expect you to join the Association if you wish to continue.
